چکیده

Measurements of exciton transport using frequency-domain nearly degenerate four-wave mixing ~NDFWM! show a failure of Fick’s law and near-ballistic excitonic motion for scale lengths less than 10 mm. A solution of the Boltzmann transport equation assuming a simple momentum-changing collision model is in agreement with the observed NDFWM line shapes and apparent subquadratic dependence on inverse scale length. The measurements show the surprising result that exciton-exciton interactions lead to a large increase in exciton linewidth with little corresponding change in exciton center-of-mass momentum, unlike exciton interactions with phonons and impurities.

Diffusive-to-ballistic transition in dynamic light transmission through thin scattering slabs: a radiative transfer approach.

We study the deviation from diffusion theory that occurs in the dynamic transport of light through thin scattering slabs. Solving numerically the time-dependent radiative transfer equation, we obtain the decay time and the effective diffusion coefficient Deff. We observe a nondiffusive behavior for systems whose thickness L is smaller than 8l(tr), where l(tr) is the transport mean free path. We...

Experimental Evidence of Non-Diffusive Thermal Transport in Si and GaAs

The length-scales at which thermal transport crosses from the diffusive to ballistic regime are of much interest particularly in the design and improvement of nano-structured materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the departure from diffusive transport has been observed in Si and GaAs using an optical transient thermal grating technique where an arbitrary, experimentally set length scale ...

Ballistic and diffusive transport of energy and heat in metals

We exploit a recently developed formalism to study the temporal behavior of the energy and heat transport in metals. This formalism shows the transition between ballistic and diffusive regimes and it highlights some interesting effects such as oscillations in the energy transport at very short-time scales. The energy relaxation of the conduction-band electrons in metals is considered to be gove...

Empirical relationship between Kubelka-Munk and radiative transfer coefficients for extracting optical parameters of tissues in diffusive and nondiffusive regimes.

Kubelka–Munk (K-M) theory is a phenomenological light transport theory that provides analytical expressions for reflectance and transmittance of diffusive substrates such as tissues. Many authors have derived relations between coefficients of K-M theory and that of the more fundamental radiative transfer equations. These relations are valid only in diffusive light transport regime where scatter...

Excitonic binding in coupled quantum wells

We study excitonic states in the presence of applied electric field in 8-nm GaAs coupled quantum wells ~QW’s! separated by a 4-nm Al0.33Ga0.67As barrier and in 6-nm In0.1Ga0.9As coupled QW’s separated by a 4-nm GaAs barrier in which effects attributed to macroscopically ordered excitonic states have been recently reported. We discuss the differences in the nature of the states and in the origin...
